Are Handouts Important?
Posted by Joseph Wurcher on November 17, 2006
Two questions I would like to hear your opinion on:
1. Do you see value in making handouts availalbe before the event to AU attendees?
2. Is a printed handout a MUST HAVE or would it be ok just providing a DVD with all handouts at check-in.Â

And I’m greedy. I want it all beforehand too.

It’s nice to have something during the class to take notes on so the notes are in context when I get back to the office.

I would like to have the handouts in the class for notes and reference, but not necessarily before hand. The DVD is a nice idea as I would have them all for ready reference and would not have to download them later.

I like having a handout in class for note taking. I use the electronic handouts to give copies to interested co-workers without my notes. I don’t see any real advantage of having the DVD before AU. Having the handouts available on DVD saves me from having to download the ones I want to give to co-workers.
I wonder if Autodesk would include the recorded classes from AU 2006 on the DVD for AU 2007?

I love the idea of having a hard copy for my use in the class but I would also love to get a dvd to use back at my office with my co-workers. I dont see advantage in getting it before AU but I guess some one can make use of it. I am also wondering if we could get the recorded classes on dvd. I was carring great espectations about AU before, now I know it is going to be way beyond that.

I have to agree with most of the other responses. The handouts are a MUST HAVE for note taking, and following along. I don’t think we need them before hand. I like the DVD idea. I was unable to download some of the class handouts, this way we are sure to get everything.

Last year in the program book, there was a section for notes…I did not use this section as I am prone to just write little notes on the handouts, so Yes, I do believe that handouts are important…Getting the handouts is a great idea, but I am not sure if that many people would make use of them…If they were given at registration on DVD, they would need to have a computer to access them…I am not fortunate enough to have a laptop or to have the company allow me to borrow one, so just the DVD would not work in my situation…The DVD is a wonderful idea though to get as a plus and I hope that stays, because it allows people to look up items and even post the on their network to classes that they did not take without having to manually download multiple files…As mentioned above, It would also be great if there could be a DVD available to all attendees that has the recorded sessions…Granted that would be a lot to ask because of how many attendees AU has, but it would be a nice perk…

I think having the handouts in advance in some format (I have a laptop DVD) would be handy for reviewing the content. It would identify the critical points in the class where I especially need to be paying attention, and maybe identify some questions I might have for the instructor. I think the opportunity to mentally ‘gear up’ for a class would enhance the learning opportunity, and I’m in favor of anything that might increase my AU ROI.

Handouts at classes for note taking (hard to keep track of notes otherwise as the first year I had them writen out together in a notebook and I got mixed up about what class I was in when I was making the notes)
DVD of all handouts would be very nice as there are always other classes that I would have like to attend and end up spending an afternoon looking up and downloading over the xmas holidays (could be handed out at end when you fill out the AU survey)

I think that having a hardcopy of the handout in the class is essential for notes and highlighting important issues. Having a DVD with all the handouts would be nice at check in but leaves the issue of how to access them at class time. I do think that as a bonus to be given out at the end of the conference is both time saving for download purposes later especially as I had a minimum of 2 classes I wanted to take for every session. As for the recorded sessions I would gladly pay a nominal fee for a DVD of those over having to stream them.

I use the handouts for note taking because some comments don’t make sense if you write them on a sheet of paper to transfer at a later date.
The DVD would be great for bringing back, since I can’t be in 2 classes at once. So many great classes… so few time slots. As far as when to hand those out, I figure it would be easier on the AU team to hand them out with the backpacks & other goodies. That also makes sure most everyone gets them.

Handounts IN class are MUST. Reference, notes, contact info, questions asked during, email address of person next to you who ran out of business cards, etc.
DVD’s would be awesome, but, they’re definitely not needed beforehand. I don’t usually even bring my laptop to AU, and I know I wouldn’t have time before classes to look at the stuff, and most of the classes will be elbow to elbow, so I should wouldn’t be using them during the class.

I think the handouts (hardcopy) at the event are very important for taking notes on the page that the speaker is talking on. I like the idea of the DVD with all of the handouts together because some of us behind a very strict firewall after we get home from the show take forever to get all the handouts printed. Keep handing them out AND give them to us on DVD.
Thanks
Daryl

I think they are a very useful tool to have in hand to take notes. Even better, last year they recorded some of the classes which became even more useful through out the year on subjects brought up that were not on the handout along with showing how to work through some of the information that was provided in the handout..
I hope they do the same this year but with more classes recorded.

A DVD would be fine with me — saves paper; and as I use a tablet, I can follow along easily during the classes.

Hard copies of hadnouts are a MUST and DVDs would be awesome after the AU. It would be even better if AU can provide the DVD videos of each of the classes, especially the one that we signed up for!

All very good comments – and I am glad to learn that what we are doing seems to meet most everybodies needs. From reading your comments, it seems, information we provide on each class is sufficent for you to decide what class you want to take. Correct assumption – or is there anything else you would find helpful upfront to help you with class selection?

I agree the hardcapies are very usefull for highlighting and adding notes during the presentation. Having the notes available afer (either online or on DVD) is very important as well. Prior would be useful to choose classes, but more detailed abstracts would accomplish the same thing. The existing abrstacts are ok, but a little sparse sometimes.

Hi Friends, I need all Revit Classrooms & BIM Presentation from AU 2006. Let me know if someone has uploaded them already on web.

I agree with most of the comments where hard copies are a must for note taking in class. The DVD is a wonderful idea, as there were often multiple classes for each time slot that I wanted to take, it was difficult to choose from the description. I like the pre-AU distribution idea because upon arrival to class, I got the handout, reviewed it and then decided to go to another class, and because I was not registered for that class, sometimes I couldn’t get in or get a copy of the handout. Some of those folks at the door are tough, but I managed to sneak in anyway…
